Creating joyful moments
“Kind words and patience go a long way” – John, living with dementia in the Sid Valley
Our mission
We are here to build a nurturing community for people living with dementia and their families in the Sid Valley, and invite everyone to contribute to ensuring that their lives have plenty of joyful moments, no matter what.
We understand that living with dementia is difficult, that the process of diagnosis can be challenging, and ongoing support can be patchy.
That’s why we’re here. We have listened, and we will continue to listen to you, to improve the quality of life of anyone living with dementia in our community.
Why we’re here
One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime, either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both. And, one in three of us will be diagnosed with it.
Here in Sidmouth, over half of the town’s population is over 60 years old, so, whether we know it or not, all of us will meet someone with dementia.
Furthermore, we know that there are around double the number of people in the Sid Valley living with dementia than have received a diagnosis.
How we can help
Empowerment is at the heart of our approach in raising awareness about living with dementia. We want to encourage more understanding and compassion to enable people with dementia, their families and carers, to live well in our community.
On our website you can find out about some of the activities and groups you can get involved with in Sidmouth, and find further information and support, both locally and nationally.
How you can help
All of us can play a part in creating a dementia friendly Sidmouth.
You can volunteer for us and make a real difference in your community.
And through us, businesses can access free dementia awareness training.
We hope that together, we create a halo effect: that the compassionate behaviour of a few in the beginning, becomes many in the end…
